Painless Methods for Hair

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Hair removal is often linked with the pain it brings, it is no wonder because methods such as waxing and tweezing are indeed painful. The level of pain that comes with removing unwanted hairs depend on various factors such as your personal threshold of pain and the area in which you wish hair to be removed. However with advanced technology and better science, the experts have come up with near painless hair removal methods. Here are some (near) painless hair removal methods from top to toe!

Intense Pulsed Light

Also known as the IPL by the experts, is a faster and more affordable way of hair removal method as compared to using laser. The light moves through the skin until it meets with the root of the hair, and the light then becomes heat that will vaporize the root. This, however is not a permanent method, although IPL does reduce the amount of body hair permanently as it destroys hair-generating organs.

This has to be done by a professional as it uses a special equipment, hence this method appears to be rather pricey.

Intense Pulsed Light can be done to any part of the body. The downside to this hair removal method is that it only works on dark colored hair. It has no effect on white hair and is less potent on blond hair.

Depilatories

This method removes hair with the aid of chemicals. It is usually in the forms of lotion, cream, gel and powder. Using chemicals to help remove hair is a pain-free process as the chemicals disintegrate the bond in the skin structure and erodes the hair. Hence making it easy to rub off.

This can be done on your own with no help needed.

Such hair removal method is usually used strictly for the limbs, unless otherwise stated on the label. The downside to this might be the short-lived effect, which can be countered by diligently applying the chemical once hair is visible again.

Threading

Probably the most traditional way of hair removal to date, much like its name suggests, threading involves the use of a cotton thread, held in a specific way which is capable of removing a whole row of hair, nipping it right at the follicle. The process is quick and near painless when executed by an experienced practitioner.

Threading has to be done by another person as the thread needs to be held in a specific way, mimicking the motion of a scissors.

Permanent Hair Removal

It is an ongoing desire for us to remove unwanted and excess hair on our body, hair that begins to grow when we are in adolescence. Hair grows on almost everywhere on our body, our face, our legs, bikini line and armpit to name a few. We are only interested in the hair growing on our scalp and will attempt to spare no effort in ensuring our hair catches the attention of others.

There are many methods in the market nowadays to remove excess, unwanted hair, but very few offer a permanent solution. It ranges from traditional methods such as shaving to the new age methods such as laser. There are 3 new age solutions that offer permanent hair removal.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL)
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses high energy and high intensity light energy directly on the hair follicles where the hair will grow. The light energy is then converted to heat energy and in turn causes damage to the hair follicles. A burst of 5 to 6 pulses in quick succession is applied on the intended area it can destroy the hair follicles yet keeping the skin intact. IPL is a non ablative resurfacing technique that only targets the dermis and leaving the epidermis untouched. It also have a minimal downtime as compared to other techniques.

Laser Hair Removal
An invisible concentrate beam of light is targeted at certain hair follicles, killing it immediately and thus preventing future hair growth while preserving the surrounding skin. The laser beam is targeted at the root of the follicles and it begins immediately when the concentrated laser beam finds the melanin. Laser hair removal is popular as it is fast and efficient. However, side effects such as redness and swelling may occur to some people with sensitive skin.

Electrolysis
Electrolysis hair removal is currently the only method approved by FDA for permanent removal of hair. A fine needle probe is inserted into the hair follicles, sending electricity into the follicles, killing it and preventing future growth. The hair is then removed by tweezers. However in this method, each hair is removed individually and it will take a long time to remove the entire patch of hair. It is also considerably much more painful as compared to IPL and laser removal as electricity is constantly sent to the follicles.

There are many options in the market for hair removal. Depending on the budget and pain tolerance of each individual, the correct method can be chosen and say hi to hair free days.

This method of hair removal is mainly done on the face, especially on the eyebrows, upper and lower lips. The only downside is probably the momentarily pain similar to that of tweezing, which is caused by pulling out a substantial amount of hair as opposed to tweezing strand by strand.
